Posting from Saturay

Shit has hit the fan. Trying to keep everything up in the air at the same time.

The Joseph project is done. Might be a minor correction or two, but as far as I'm concerned the tracks are delivered and I'm done.

The LoG thing is done, tracks are delivered.

That's about all that's done done. Still so many things happening.

Work is the shit. Had a big corporate meeting yesterday at the hospital about how our employee satisfaction scores are pretty low, and then since I got here at 6am it's been nothing but problems and troubleshooting other departments - things I'm not even supposed to be involved in. But because I'm at the front desk, everyone comes to me with problems. Trying to be creative, but there's only so much I can do licensing wise for treatment. Hard turning people away when I know what to do and have done it before for years, but Texas says I can't do it because I'm only certified in New York. If I could just do my job, that would be great.

I swear, one day they are going to take away my stapler.

Still have a bunch of papers to round up and fax, hopefully I can get to that sometime this weekend. Not like there's anyone in Big Corporation to review anything I send in today or tomorrow, it will sit on the fax machine until Monday, but it would be nice to get one step closer on something.

Got about half an hour of sleep last night. After getting out of work and dropping William off to work I had about 3 1/2 hours of sleep scheduled, but then Tucker kept barking at nothing. He wanted his people home so he could sleep, and Daddy was missing so he borked. Wouldn't curl up in bed with me or calm down. Just Bork. Caffeinated up and starting to feel it finally, but I'm going to be really really tired in another ten hours or so.

Tried to write as I'd mentioned in a previous post. Got all of two sentences down before being called away. Not much progress.

Lab tech is now an hour late, and no sign of any replacement.

Two hours. OA Steve, work me a miracle.

Survived the floods when many around us did not. Not much to say on that subject, I'm sure the news has said enough by now.

After not writing for 9 months I suddenly was hit by three new fic ideas yesterday out of nowhere. Might write one, the other two not so much. Finally l95% done with my last commission so might actually have time to write for a bit. I'm probably so rusty by now it will be horrible but have to start somewhere.

Gong to work in two hours. Not sure if I should just hang around the house until them or head out to the store. Need an office chair and some black fabric dye. Not the kind of thing to buy online, but I really don't like driving around with the roads and traffic the way they are. Maybe when some more roads reopen it will be better, but for now it's a nightmare with every single car in a three county radius using 99 as the only open North-South route. Yesterday Google said the drive time was only 350% of normal, so it is getting better as people realize you simply cannot get there from here.

Been biking a lot tho. Getting to see a lot of the damage upclose and see a lot of the neighborhoods I've never been through. Almost made it down to Camp Cinco yesterday but the path was still flooded out. Lots of mud. Took me an hour to bike back.

Rightey, off to Joann Fabrics I guess then work.

Riding the Storm Out

Sitting here as Harvey blows through. Not bad where I am, just like a big old soaker rainstorm. Bit of a breeze but nothing like what the coast is getting. Poor Dee had to evacuate, God only knows where she ended up. Alls the same, we're stocked for most weather emergencies after living through the ice storm of '03. Still ended up going to the store for some routine stuff, veggies and fruit and sale items. Crackheads grabbing toilet paper like it's going out of style. Like how much do you really plan on shitting in the next week? Did you not have any previously? Idiots. The media spreads the panic an suddenly there's a run on poptarts and bananas. South of us where it came inland, yes, stock up and prepare. You had a week's notice, it's not like an earthquake or tornado. The rest of us? Use common sense. Even if you eat canned beans for a week you're not gonna die.

Working on some tracks again, not my type of thing but in the other way this time. Too many blast beats that came already compressed to hell. I swear the waveform looks like a 2x4. Gonna work on them until the power gives out.

Put on the A Team at work, the ride the storm out crew. Don't have to go back in until 6pm Saturday, and might get stuck there if it all floods, so I'm packing a rucksack and dumping it all into a space saver bag for dryness. Even if I have to swim to work, I can grab a towel and be dry in half an hour. They took out the cafeteria in the clinic, so more canned goods and fruit. I can always put the cans back if I don't need them. Not much worse than trying to live off of ER peanut butter and graham crackers.

Got a lot done today after work. Got out before most of the rain started coming through, and I'm trying to flip back to night shift, so staying up. Got the floors done, laundry and dishes done, one dog washed, laundry put away. Didn't get to making the rye bread yet, maybe later. One more track I really want to slog through and then it's a good stopping point in the tracks.

Fighting between my dental insurance carrier, who bore the brunt of the chain dental billing office's nonsense (multiple billings, retractions, appeals on duplicate billings, rebillings, horribly unethical shenanigans) and the billing office itself. Dental office sent me a large bill with no date of service and no CPT or D codes, just requiring payment. Oh no, honey, don't mess with someone who used to do radiology billing.

Called the insurance company and claim was settled in full with no balance due. Had to have the insurance company call the billing office because billing office will not listen to me try to explain why their multiple billings of same procedure were denied. You do one procedure and bill it five times, it does not mean you will be paid five times. You get one payment and four denials. Sounds simple enough to me, but what do I know, I only used to do radiology billing, not dental.

Hopefully Alex, the cheery insurance company guy will sort them out. Dental Office mysteriously quits answering the phones when their bullshit gets pointed out.

Jury duty tomorrow, and them a 'mandatory' meeting at work I might not be able to make if they judge doesn't let me out.

Plus in addition to the slow leak in the front passenger tire I now have a nail in the passenger rear tire. Holing air, so I'm leaving it in for now, but it has to get fixed eventually.

Working on more tracks for someone else. They're not very interesting or catchy but it's work. It's all 4/4 and 440, not like it's difficult, but my attention is hard won if it's not interesting. Zero crossing, snare beat, all a cakewalk really. Just... Moon, June... uugh.

Still to friggin hot here. Houston? So much for going outside.

Slid around on brains last night. Been a while since I had to do that. Sadly the media really got the story messed up so the public at large will be confused and panicked, but long story short is the guy died. We never did find an exit wound anywhere on his head so the bullet was probably still in there. The coroner will find it. Drugs and guns don't mix, ok people? Ft. Bend will not really be looking for the shooter; odds are he slipped back into Houston somewhere without a trace.

Doing some work for Joseph. More than likely will take a few weeks if I work at it on a regular basis. Not the most exciting, but he pays well for a vanity project. Gotta get the 002 set up again - would be nice to have a bigger setup but I'll deal with eight tracks. Bank bank bank bank bank... uugh. It distracts from the knife and gun club for a while.

New purse

Finally found a new purse. Been on the lookout for six months, given that I dislike purses and much prefer my simple leather wallet shoved into my back pocket it's saying something. It's clearance - otherwise I would not have gotten it, but for $20 it's nice enough. Black and white leather, nice strap to it, and it's not overly big or bulky but it's still structured. Like a big girl grown up bag instead of anything with fringe or metal studs I have gotten in the past. Got some designer name on it but didn't recognize it.

Was up at 5m this morning thanks to a messed up sleep schedule and had all the energy in the world. Worked on the pool, dad laundry and dishes, prepped the jalapenos for pressure canning and had the carne picata marinating, mopped the living room floor all by 9am. Then had to go get dog food and just the short drive across town sucked all my energy. It wasn't bad at the mall while getting my purse, but as soon as I gout out of the Farm & Fleet the car was absolutely roasting and I've been tired ever since. It's only 3am now and I think it's about time for dinner.

Night has been good, not too busy. Carol had a rush on the midshift before me, but we got everyone processed and home and now it's good.

Two requests to build Karaoke files. Not the funnest of jobs and the pay is shit, but for something I can do in my jammies and not really have to listen to it's like free money.

Only problem is they're so messed up for karaoke songs.

Al Stewart - Roads to Moscow (really, who would sing this at any karaoke???)
Joe Jackson - Be My Number Two (what a romantic, hope she doesn't listen too close)

I gotta figure out where this guy is singing at, 'cos that is sure to be one fucked up karaoke show. I applaud his diversity, they're really good songs, but Karaoke? The mind boggles.

Love Prog

Sometime I love working with prog. It's fascinating, endlessly creative, and can go anywhere.

Other times it's just a pain in the ass.

Trying to synch up a track now where the lyrics technically start on the 5 (or -1) and then the strum comes on the one. It sounds right when you play it, but it doesn't read right or chart well. That and all the AmDim7Sus6thDropG fucking pretzel fingers. These aren't even real chords. They're not even Guitar Craft chords back transcribed. You threw your guitar down the stairs and taped it. "Tune to DDDGBD and Capo 3rd" I shit you not. Freaking Mitchell polio chords.

Life is the same. I'm alive. Woohoo for that. Have seen in the last week:
a stabbing to the face
a man high on crack and having a psychotic break (perhaps related perhaps coincidental)
a five year old who suffocated his two year old brother
another two year old with a seizure ongoing 3 hours before parents brought her in
non-verbal autistic child who ripped off his own cornea

Burnt. Done. Just give me an acute MI I can ship off to the cath lab and be done with. Wish I could go back OTR, I miss it. Different kind of stress. Much higher payout, even if the paycheck is shit. Jonesing for travel, which isn't good. I wanted the Local life, now I've got it, day job and all.

June WHIP your WIPs is a non-starter. I took the laptop into work and couldn't even open it. Why can't I write a romantic love scene? Something nice and squishy and cuddly. I have the ending plotted out, I just have to get through the 'making love not fucking' scene and I'll be done with it. UUgh. Going back to ProTools. Lesser of two evils right now.

Finally got myself a new bicycle just for me. William can have his racing bike back now. Took a Memorial Day sale and a 20% off coupon and a free shipping code but I got an afforable entry level bike. It's not WalMart shit quality, but in no way is it the level of quality the people at the bike store were trying to sell me. It's ok. It's basic. It will work. I can afford it. That's all I asked for. Sure a $1k is going to be nice, it had better be for the price, but when it gets stolen as it eventually will, it doesn't matter how nice it was. Going to take a week or so to get in, but that's ok. It's got good ratings from the pro-bike websites, with the disclaimer it's the cheapest they would possibly even consider under the right circumstances. Well, those are my circumstances. If I was doing the BP MS150 or the Tour De France, yeah, I'd drop several thousand on a bike. But I'm not. I'm going to the grocery store or just cruising around town for some exercise. I think it will work.

Picked up a shift tonight 10p-630a so I'm gonna try and stay busy up until work time, then grab some tea when I get into work for some energy. Going out with Rebecca tomorrow so I have to sleep when I get home in the morning.

Time to go make some doggie stew. Lots of veggies were on sale at the asian market, so they have all sorts of root vegetables to eat.

Got my new shoes in today. Guess a new pair is always nice, but seeing as I ordered them online I was a bit wary. My feet are large and hard to fit, so finding anything in the correct 10EEE size is a surprise.

Found a 9.5 EE pair of Sketchers. Never worn Sketchers before. They're actually pretty comfortable so far. Left foot fits well, right foot is a little narrow. Hopefully that will stretch with some wear. Lots of padding in them, again, is also nice after being confined to moccasins for a number of years before Crocs came along.

Back to work tomorrow. Can't sleep as I'm still on night shift schedule. Have to go in a 2p, hoping to sleep from 5a-noon or so. Then I'm up for 36 hours. Yay. But it's at the little clinic so it's better than the main hospital. Did see my first aortic dissection last week, which was pretty gruesome when he didn't respond to the nitro and I realized what it was.

Otherwise, not much else.

Got in a good ten miles or so today before I blew the back tyre on the bike again. Hit the lip of a concrete cut out for a drainage sewer and instantly knew I was on the rim. No saving the tube, although the tire and rim look ok. Had to walk home about three miles, thank god I was on the way back home from the loop. So now I am totally without transport. Gonna get up and walk over to the bike store for a specialty tube (700c 25 with a Schrader) and then walk all the way back home. Uuugh. Walmart doesn't carry them, that would be the easy answer, and I can't wait two weeks for an order to come in from Amazon.

Plus on the walk back my right shoe started rubbing on my heel, come to find out I've worn through it and the shoe innards is rubbing against skin. Great. I've ordered new shoes from Bealls - a bandaid and some moleskin will work temporarily but it's just lovely. All at once, you know. Hate the bike I have now anyway, I stole it from William and it's not really suited for the riding I do. I need a hybrid or a mountain bike and his is definitely a road bike.

Talked to my biodad a bit. Found out he likes Singapore slings. Who would have guessed. Then again, it's a far stretch that I'm obsessed with caipirinha unless you know how it's all connected. Guess there was a bar he used to frequent and he got talking to the bartender after ordering his beer, and the bartender started trying out a new mixed drink on him every week.

Dinner was ok. found some frozen mystery meat in the freezer. Defrosted it, turns out it was really thin slices of beef, probably sirloin. So just pan fried it with some mushrooms, garlic, and onions. Pretty simple. Going to see if there's any more mystery protein. I'll eat anything and run with what it turns out to be. William not so much.

Other than that, not much. Had a ficlet pop out of nowhere yesterday, Rush of all things. Was pretty shitty, but at least I wrote something.

Weird Dream

Finally slept some from about 12:30 to 3pm but was unfortunately interrupted by some phone calls. One time I was having a great (and I mean f'iggin awesome) dream that was interrupted by a telemarketer. Grr.

Got moving this morning and got some Water JB Weld at Lowes. Got it applied and it's curing, we will see if it holds when I put more water in the pool.

Got the IGR spray down last night after the carpets dried from steam cleaning. It worked great last time we had a tick problem, so hoping it works just as well on fleas. Gonna take a while as it's not a killer, but it just keeps the fleas from sexually maturing, so after a few cycles there are no more baby fleas.

Steak for dinner. Looking forward to some iron and potatoes.

Cooked today, considering the disappointment of yesterday's Red Korean Pork Belly (smelled good while cooking but not my thing) it came out good. Spicy Tuna Sushi stack. Not 100% authentic, but the taste was there, and it's not using sushi grade tuna, just the stuff from the pantry. Website sucks giant balls, so write it down or print out.

Thinking of Mexican tomorrow. Nice charred chicken with some jalapenos, onions, garlic, and tons of cilantro. Got limes. Got tortillas. Should be easy.

Power washed the top deck today. Five years of Houston dust and grit and mold growth. Yuck. Done though, and despite a few soft spots in the decking everything still looks pretty sturdy for being built completely wrong. But hey, it's only on the front of the house, and the homebuilders are long since gone so why should they care if things are built correctly? If I ever meet this Kickarillo guy I'm gonna kick him in the nuts really hard and probably a second time while he's down just for good measure.

Went out exploring on the bike today. Sadly still using William's racing bike and attempted to go offroading in GBP. Made it back out alive, didn't crash, but road bikes just aren't meant for dirt trails. Saw lots of turtles and a blue egret but no other interesting wildlife.

Still tired all the time. No energy. Guess sleeping in three hour intervals will do that to you.

William will be hitting up the great state of Ohio tomorrow, and I made the joke of telling him to stop at Grandpa's Cheesebarn. It's in the middle of Amish country, nothing around it. Forgot that a) he loves cheese and b) he has my credit card and c) they now offer ghost pepper cheese. He is going to be in so much trouble. Great. Joke's on me I guess.

What's worse is they've apparently gone in with Sweeties Candy Co. He's got the sweet tooth from hell these days. Help me! Can I put a hold on the credit card except for gas stations and hotels?

Tired AF and not sure why. Only spent five hours toiling away in the yard. Still lots to do around the house but only so many spoons. Need to shower. Covered in sweat and mulch and bug guts. Then I can change the sheets, start laundry... And go to work tomorrow. Lovely. What vacation?

Spring Clean

William's gone OTR to work a bit again. Because of the amount of gear he had to bring he took the car. I'm left without a vehicle in the middle of the suburbs. If I was still in NY it wouldn't have been a problem, but it's houses for miles down here. On the plus side I'm still fairly young and healthy, so a few miles hike isn't going to kill me. Uncomfortable, yes, but if I absolutely need something I can get to a store or the doctors.

Leisure travel is pretty much out of the question.

Did get the bicycle out again - had to take a form over to the water department. First time I've ridden since David's mother died. Kinda stopped after that, not really sure why. 'Tis ok, tires were a bit low but that was easy enough to fix.

Pool is on the mend. Got the plaster patched up and filled the bastard. Working on balancing the chemicals now. Looks perfect for now but want to make sure the algae doesn't take hold. I think a lot of the problem (other than the pool guy turned out to be a major fuck up) is that I relied on William to do the little maintenance. I can't rely on him for anything, not keeping the pool up, not medicating the dogs, not even pulling out a protein from the freezer for dinner. I'm busy as fuck when he's gone, but the dog's eyes and ears miraculously clear up, the pool stays blue, and the yard is neat and tidy. Bad bas repeating pattern I should learn from.

Already vacuumed much of the house. Still lots of spring cleaning to do, but I have a few days before heading back to work. I'll get it there eventually.

Brain Bleach

Normally not much in the ER bothers me, aside from assholed entitlement.

1. Lady (I use the term very loosely) comes in with her mother. Daughter is my age, refuses to speak with registration or nurses, mother does everything. Fine, ok, whatever. Complaints of generalized abdominal pain, nausea, does not appear to be in too much distress. She's a big girl, bigger than our Big Mike. BMI was well over 50. Again, whatever, gonna figure it out and shake my head and send her on her way. She's pregnant. Didn't say anything about possibly being pregnant. Her thighs were the side of a human, so how could you find it? UUugh, I felt so bad ordering that transvag ultrasound. Poor Stephanie had to get in there. So to add to the myriad of preexisting chronic lifestyle conditions, now she's pregnant. Patient grabbed up her discharge papers from the nurse's hand and waddled her way out mad. Like it was my fault she's pregnant. Directed her to prenatal care and OB, doubtful if she'll take on any of it.

2. Woman in her late 20s brings in her 3 year old son with a penis infection. Boys put it in everything and aren't the cleanest. Mother stated that no one ever told her she had to pull back the foreskin and clean underneath. I was surprised this kid could pee he was so badly constricted and clogged up. I just don't get it. I know she was told at his birth that she had to clean him, and she's obviously handled a dick before if she's had a kid. Uuuuugh! I feel really bad for the kid, the mother not so much.

We license people to drive cars and clean teeth and carry guns. Isn't it about time you need a license to have a child?

In other news, finally got the oil changed on my car. What a fiasco. Went to bed at 10am and got up at 6p so now I'll be up all night again even on my day off. Guess I should clean the house a bit.

Lots on the agenda tomorrow

Gonna be busy tomorrow. Luke's got a vet appointment an hour away in Houston, then we have to run back here, pick up William and run the new motorcycle out to Old Town Katy for some repairs, then hit the eye doc's by 2pm. Gonna be a tight squeeze and I'm gonna be real tired come 5pm or so. I've already informed William he's making supper for a change. I hope his idea of cooking isn't Papa Johns again.

Still haven't gotten anywhere with his Nurse Case Manager, she refuses to pick up the phone or call us back. Ended up talking to someone at Lowe's corporate who was actually able to find his information and give us some good leads to start on.

Want to start working on the 'Cover Band' chapter two again. Stuck in some rather awkward heavy smut and it's challenging to write and have it come across as honest. Was going good for a bit, but then I get to the sexy bits and ... I can't write that stuff at work. Good plotty bits, sure, but I just can't do heavy smut at work. My home time is so limited these days, I end up spending my time doing household things, gardening, playing with the dogs... I'm not exactly happy with RockFic at the moment. I think the quality has just gone down the shithole in the last year or so. There's still a few authors I love and will read anything by, but a lot of it is just poorly written. Drabbles, yes, they're crafted and can be short and amazing, but when each chapter is 300 words? Sorry, it's not for me. A little bridge chapter, sure, we all do that, but not every single fucking chapter.

Got the midi back up and running in the studio. Lost both keyboard somehow overnight. There was always that reason I hated midi. With analogue you can see where something's gone wrong, but with midi it's all in the computer somewhere. Some fucking menu or option. Frustrating as hell.

Right, going to check my flyers at midnight and then get to bed. Won't have to leave until after rush hour, but it's still a long drive.

Had someone piss on the floor at work today. Not a patient. Not someone with a medical condition. By all means, if you are having a medical issue piss away. No, this was a visitor for someone in the hospital. They waited until I was busy with something and pissed by the windows, right in the middle of the floor. Who does that? Didn't even tell me they had an accident. Just left it there for someone else to slip on. People are assholes.

Got William's new phone up and running. Number is the same, but it's a LG Volt, a clone of mine. Not a high end phone by any means, but his LG Tribute was driving him batty. At least he'll have some storage on the SD card now, and a better interface.

Me, I'm tired. Going to bed. Been working to much again.

Motorcycles, Burials, and Court

Dw is telling me 145 entries not copied over from LJ. Actually it's weird, says transfer complete then right below it says transfer failed. ??? Not sure which posts it failed to copy over. Everything looks ok on first glance.

Bought a motorcycle today. Guy was actually pretty decent. Ex-Army dude, decent enough neighborhood. Bike's in fair condition, some minor rust and wear issues, but all the mechanical bits are good. Back tyre needs replacing, but he gave us the new one, just hasn't put it on. William drove the bike home, god bless him. He got lost along the way when he couldn't keep up with me. Poor man has zero sense of direction. He pulled over and txted where he was, so I told him to keep going west and he didn't know where west was. I could have told him left, but I didn't know what direction he was facing. At least his mother admits she has no directional sense. William's too stubborn.

Dad's burial is scheduled for 5/15. Uugh, I don't want to go to NY for a people planting. We've already had services and said goodbye, just pop the casket in the dirt. I don't understand his family sometimes. It's not his dad, not in any real sense of what matters. It's just a fancy box with some biological waste. Not like it's gonna be open casket five months post mortem.

And need to get the car's oil changed. Wanted to do it myself but William says no. I watched how to do it and found all the right sockets and everything, he still says no. Hate to tell him that the monkeys at a quicklube or WalMart aren't going to have much more training that I do, and I can 100% guarantee you they care a lot less.

He's got jury duty tomorrow as well. One more pain in the arse to deal with. Doesn't look like it's in a good neighborhood and it's far away from here, so I hope he doesn't get picked. I'd kick up a fuss about the back injury and needing to charge and weasel my way out of it but he probably won't.

Baking Fail

Tried to make these last night as per the recipe given and they pretty much failed horrifically. The taste was ok, but the directions are shameful. Going to have to re-work it.

Chocolate Frosted Sugar Cookie Bars

Yield: 9 large bars or 16 smaller bars

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 50 minutes
For the sugar cookie bars:

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1 stick (4 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the chocolate frosting (double all this):

1 1/2 sticks (6 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1/3 cup cocoa powder, sifted
3 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
Rainbow sprinkles

To make the bars:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8 by 8-inch baking pan with foil, leaving an overhang on all sides.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter, cream cheese, and sugar on medium-high speed until well combined and smooth, about 3 minutes. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and beat until combined. On low speed, gradually add the flour mixture and beat until combined.

Press the dough into the prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes, or until lightly golden brown on top. Place the pan on a wire rack and let cool completely.
To make the frosting:

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the butter on medium-high speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. On low speed add in the powdered sugar, cream, vanilla, salt, and cocoa. Increase speed to high and beat for 3 minutes, or until light and fluffy.

Remove the bars from the pan using the foil overhang. Let cool. Frost with a thick layer of frosting. Sprinkle with sprinkles before cutting into squares. Serve or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
