Played with Timmy the drummer today. Not like that, but had him track a few things. Testing out the studio setup mostly. Monitoring in the same room as a full kit and a Marshall stack will not work - I told William this a long time ago. I couldn't hear a damn thing through the cans, had to just sight the levels and pray. Came out alright, kick sounded like crap but for a scratch track it was ok.
Only problem with Timmy is that he doesn't feel the 11/8 time of one of the songs. Says he's got to go home and do the math. He doesn't get the swing of it, granted most folk don't, but it's the same groove as Rush, and some Crimson. Actually, Gates of Delierium is part 11/8 (phrased as 3/8, 4/4 then 5/8, 4/4, and then to 3/8, 3/8, 3/8), just the line Squire plays. Err, yeah, geekiness aside, it was a bit dissapointing he couldn't flow with it. Kept adding that extra beat in there and it just wasn't happening. Seems good tho, solid, and he knows how William is which is a plus.
YYZ, that's another one William was trying to show him, trying to shake Timmy out of his 4/4 fixation. Don't think 10/8 will be in his repitoire soon either.
